Writing for Skimmers: How to Make Every Piece of Content Work in 10 Seconds
Most readers will never read your content — they will skim it. Here is how to structure every piece so that skimmers get the message and readers get the depth.
Table of contents
The Skim Rate Reality
Studies consistently show that 80% of website visitors read headlines, and only 20% read the body. On LinkedIn, the drop-off rate after the first three lines of a post is around 70%.
This is not a failure of your writing. It is human behavior. People skim to find reasons to read.
Your job is to make skimming pay off — for you and for them.
The Skim Layer
Every piece of content should have two layers:
Skim layer: What the reader sees when they scan in 10 seconds. Headlines, subheads, bullet points, bold text, first and last sentences of each paragraph.
Read layer: The full argument, evidence, nuance, and depth that rewards readers who go deeper.
If your skim layer communicates the main idea, some readers will go deeper. If your skim layer is empty — generic subheads, no bold emphasis, walls of undifferentiated text — you lose everyone.
Making the Skim Layer Work
Subheads as mini-headlines: Your H2s and H3s should be complete thoughts, not just labels. "Why vague copy fails" is a mini-headline. "Background" is a label. One creates a reason to read on; the other doesn't.
Bold key ideas, not random words: Every 2–3 paragraphs, bold the single most important sentence. Skimmers will read only bold text in many cases — make it count.
First sentences carry weight: The first sentence of every paragraph should summarize what the paragraph argues. This lets skimmers get the gist from first sentences alone.
Bullets for specifics: When listing examples, steps, or options — use bullets. Bullets are scannable. Prose is not.
The Test
Skim your own content in 10 seconds. What do you take away? If the answer is "not much," your skim layer needs work.
