How to Write a Newsletter That People Actually Look Forward to Receiving
Most newsletters are tolerated. A few are anticipated. Here is what separates the two — and how to get into the second category.

The Anticipated Newsletter
There is a small category of newsletters that subscribers look forward to. They notice when an issue is late. They read every word. They reply unprompted. They tell friends.
These newsletters are not necessarily the most polished or the most frequently sent. They share a different quality: they consistently deliver something the reader cannot get anywhere else.
The Four Properties of Must-Read Newsletters
1. A distinctive perspective The newsletter does not just summarize what everyone else is saying. It has a point of view. It takes positions. It is willing to disagree with conventional wisdom and explain why.
Readers follow people with perspectives. They ignore aggregators.
2. Radical specificity The newsletter speaks to exactly one type of person in exactly one type of situation. Not "entrepreneurs" — "solo consultants who have hit $200k and are trying to scale past $500k without hiring."
The more specific the audience definition, the more every member of that audience feels like it was made for them.
3. Consistent format with surprise content The best newsletters have a familiar structure (readers know what to expect) but consistently surprising content within that structure (readers never know what specific insight they will get).
Predictable structure reduces friction. Surprising content creates anticipation.
4. A genuine voice The newsletter sounds like a specific person, not a content department. It has quirks, opinions, specific language patterns, recurring references. Readers feel like they know the writer.
This takes time to develop. It cannot be faked. But it is the most durable competitive advantage a newsletter can have.
