Email Deliverability in 2026: Why Your Emails Are Going to Spam (And How to Fix It)

You can write the perfect email and it still goes to spam. Here is what actually controls deliverability and how to fix the most common problems.

The Deliverability Problem Nobody Talks About

Marketers obsess over subject lines, copy, and send times. They rarely talk about deliverability — whether their emails actually reach inboxes in the first place.

If your emails have a 20% open rate, it may not mean 80% of people chose not to open. It may mean 80% never received it.

The Deliverability Factors That Actually Matter

Sender reputation: Your sending domain has a reputation score with major email providers. Send too many emails to unengaged subscribers, get too many spam complaints, or hit spam traps — your reputation drops and your deliverability suffers.

Authentication: SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records tell email providers that you are who you say you are. Without all three correctly configured, many providers will route your emails to spam by default.

List hygiene: Sending to invalid addresses and unengaged subscribers hurts your sender reputation. Clean your list quarterly: remove hard bounces immediately, suppress subscribers who have not opened in 6 months.

Content signals: Excessive links, spam trigger words, mismatched sender names, and HTML heavy emails all trigger spam filters. Plain text emails from a real person consistently outperform heavily designed emails on deliverability.

The Deliverability Audit

Run this quarterly:

  1. Send a test email through Mail-Tester.com — aim for 9/10 or higher
  2. Check your authentication records are correctly configured
  3. Remove hard bounces and suppressions from your list
  4. Segment out your unengaged subscribers and run a re-engagement campaign before removing them

The 2026 Gmail/Yahoo Changes

Both Gmail and Yahoo now require bulk senders to maintain spam complaint rates below 0.1% and unsubscribe rates below 0.3%. Exceed these thresholds and your domain gets throttled — emails slow to deliver or route to spam at scale.
