YouTube SEO: How to Get Your Videos Found by People Who Need You
YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world. Here is how to optimize your videos to be found by prospects at the moment they need your expertise.
Table of contents
YouTube as a Search Engine
Most marketers think of YouTube as a social media platform. It is more accurately described as a search engine with video results.
The majority of YouTube views come from search, not from subscriber feeds. Viewers search for solutions to specific problems and watch the video that best answers their query. This is fundamentally different from TikTok or Instagram, where discovery is algorithm-driven and interest-based.
The implication: YouTube SEO is search engine optimization, not social media optimization. Keywords, titles, and thumbnails matter more than posting frequency and follower count.
The Video Title Formula
The highest-performing YouTube video titles follow a predictable pattern: they contain the exact phrase a viewer would search for, and they communicate a clear, specific outcome.
Not: "My thoughts on email marketing" Yes: "Email Deliverability in 2026: Why Your Emails Go to Spam (And How to Fix It)"
The second title contains a searchable phrase ("email deliverability 2026," "emails go to spam"), communicates the specific problem, and promises a solution.
Keywords That Drive Business
For consultants and B2B service providers, the highest-value YouTube keywords are not the highest-volume ones. They are the keywords with high buyer intent: "how to [specific professional task]," "[problem] for [specific industry]," "best [tool/approach] for [specific use case]."
These searches have lower volume and higher intent. The viewer searching "how to build a content strategy for a B2B SaaS company" is a potential client. The viewer searching "what is content marketing" is not.
The Description and Tags System
YouTube's algorithm reads video descriptions to understand content. Write descriptions of 200–400 words that contain your primary keyword phrase, related keyword phrases, and a genuine summary of the video's content. Include a link to your lead magnet or newsletter in the first two lines.
