On-Page SEO in 2026: What Still Matters and What Doesn't

SEO advice is full of outdated tactics. Here is what actually moves rankings in 2026 — and what you can stop worrying about.

The Noise-to-Signal Problem in SEO

Search the internet for "on-page SEO" and you will get 400 different checklists, half of which are based on how Google worked in 2015. Some of these tactics are neutral (they don't hurt, they don't help). Some are actively bad.

Here is what actually matters in 2026.

What Still Matters

Title tags and H1s: Your primary keyword should appear in the title tag and H1. This is fundamental and has not changed.

Content comprehensiveness: Does your page answer the question more completely than competitors? Google measures this through user behavior (do people find what they need and stay, or do they bounce back to search?).

Page experience signals: Core Web Vitals — loading speed, visual stability, interactivity. Technical but critical. A slow site loses rankings even with great content.

Internal linking: Connecting your pages to each other signals topical relationships and helps Google understand your site structure. Most sites under-invest here.

E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust): Not a direct ranking factor but a framework Google uses to evaluate content quality. Author bios, citations, specific claims, and real examples all contribute.

What No Longer Matters (Or Never Did)

Exact keyword density: Writing "marketing consultant" exactly 11 times does nothing. Google understands semantics, not keyword repetition.

Keyword stuffing in meta descriptions: Meta descriptions do not directly affect rankings. Write them for click-through rate, not SEO.

H2/H3 keyword matching: Every H2 does not need to contain your keyword. Use headers for structure and readability.

The Simple On-Page SEO Checklist

Target keyword in title tag and H1. Comprehensive answer to the search query. Fast load time and mobile-friendly layout. 2–3 internal links to related content. Specific author information on the page.

That's it. Everything else is distraction.
