The Data-Driven Content Strategy: How to Use Analytics to Know What to Write Next

Instead of guessing what content to create, let your data tell you. Here is the analytics-driven process for deciding what to write, update, and retire.

Why Content Decisions Should Be Data-Driven

Most content decisions are made based on intuition, competitive observation, or editorial interest. These produce content that the creator finds interesting but that does not necessarily serve business goals.

A data-driven content strategy makes decisions based on: what content is driving the most organic traffic, what content converts at the highest rate, what keywords represent underserved opportunities, and what existing content can be improved to perform better.

Step 1: Audit Your Existing Content

Before creating new content, understand how existing content is performing. Pull a report of your top 20 organic pages by: traffic, time-on-page, and conversion rate.

What you are looking for:

  • High traffic, high conversion: Your best content. Create more like it.
  • High traffic, low conversion: Good content with a poor conversion path. Fix the CTA or lead magnet.
  • Low traffic, high conversion: Underperforming content that converts well when found. A candidate for SEO optimization to increase traffic.
  • Low traffic, low conversion: Dead weight. Update or retire.

Step 2: Identify Keyword Gaps

Use Google Search Console to find keywords where you appear in positions 11–20 (page 2). These are pages that rank but not quite well enough to capture significant traffic.

A focused optimization effort (improving the content quality, adding internal links, improving the title and meta description) can often move these pages to page 1 — producing traffic gains from existing content rather than from new content.

Step 3: Research New Keyword Opportunities

For new content, use keyword research to identify topics with:

  • Meaningful monthly search volume (500+ searches/month for most niches)
  • Keyword Difficulty below your current authority level
  • Clear buyer intent (not just information curiosity)

Create content targeting these gaps in your existing coverage.
