What the Standard Advice Gets Wrong

The standard advice for building a consulting practice: get certifications, build a network, attend industry events, follow up consistently, and nurture relationships over time.

This advice worked when relationships were the primary discovery mechanism. It does not account for the fact that most buyers now discover consultants through content before they ever interact with them directly.

The 2026 Reality

In 2026, the most effective consulting practices are built on content authority. Clients discover consultants through Google searches, LinkedIn scrolling, and podcast listening — not through referrals from people they know.

This is not to say referrals do not matter. They still convert at the highest rate. But the first touchpoint, the moment of initial discovery, has shifted dramatically toward content.

What Actually Works Now

Contrarian position 1: Charge more before you have the track record to justify it High prices signal confidence. Confidence signals competence. In a market where buyers cannot evaluate quality before purchase, price is a proxy signal. The consultant charging $500/hour is assumed to be better than the one charging $150/hour — regardless of actual quality.

Contrarian position 2: Publish in public before you feel ready Most consultants wait until they have enough experience to say something authoritative. The consultants who build audiences fastest publish from the beginning of their learning curve — sharing what they are figuring out in real time. The uncertainty is the authenticity.

Contrarian position 3: Say no to most opportunities Every yes to a client who is not your ideal fit is a no to a client who is. The most successful consulting practices I have observed are the ones that developed the discipline to decline mismatched work early — even when it hurt revenue in the short term.
