Content Pillars: How to Never Run Out of Things to Write About

Most consultants have a content calendar that dies after two weeks. Content pillars solve that by giving you an infinite idea generation system.

The Blank Page Problem

The number one reason consultants stop publishing consistently is not time — it's ideas. Every week, they sit down to write and draw a blank.

Content pillars fix this permanently.

What Content Pillars Are

Content pillars are the 3–5 topic areas that you will consistently write about. They are intersection points between:

  1. What you know deeply
  2. What your audience needs
  3. What the market is searching for

Everything you publish lives inside one of these pillars. When you need a new idea, you pick a pillar and write something new within it.

How to Choose Your Pillars

Start with your offer. What do you help clients with? Each major component becomes a candidate pillar.

If you're a marketing consultant: content strategy, SEO, LinkedIn growth, AI tools, personal brand.

Filter by audience need: which of these does your ideal client most need to learn about? Keep 3–5. Eliminate the rest.

Filter by competitive advantage: which of these can you write about more credibly than anyone else? These become your primary pillars.

The Pillar-Cluster Content Engine

Each pillar generates an unlimited supply of sub-topics:

Pillar: LinkedIn Growth Sub-topics: profile optimization, content strategy, lead generation, analytics, engagement tactics, LinkedIn algorithm, DM outreach, thought leadership, company pages, LinkedIn articles vs. posts, etc.

Each sub-topic is a content piece. Each content piece raises new questions that become the next content piece.

This is why consultants with pillars never run out of ideas. The pillar structure organically generates more questions than you can ever fully answer.

Rotating Your Pillars

Every 6–12 months, review your pillars. Which are generating engagement? Which feel stale? Which new topics have emerged that your audience needs?

Evolution is healthy. Just don't change pillars so frequently that you lose the topical authority you've been building.
