How to Build a Marketing Dashboard That Drives Decisions
Most marketing dashboards display data without producing decisions. Here is how to build a dashboard that tells you what to do next, every single week.
Table of contents
The Dashboard Problem
The typical marketing dashboard shows: sessions, page views, social followers, email subscribers. It is populated with data and produces no decisions.
A decision-driving dashboard is different. It shows the specific metrics that answer the question "what should I do next week?" — and nothing else.
The Decision-Driving Dashboard Structure
Section 1: Leading indicators (activity you control)
- —Posts published this week (vs. target)
- —Emails sent (vs. schedule)
- —Guest appearances pitched
- —Outreach attempts
These metrics tell you whether you are doing the work. If these are on target and results are not coming, look at the quality. If these are off target, the problem is execution.
Section 2: Lagging indicators (outcomes you have influence over)
- —Organic sessions (vs. prior month)
- —Email subscribers added
- —Inbound leads (vs. prior month)
- —Discovery calls booked
These tell you whether the work is producing results. Trends matter more than absolute numbers.
Section 3: Business metrics (the numbers that matter most)
- —Proposals sent
- —Proposals closed
- —Revenue attributed to each channel
These connect marketing activity to business outcomes.
The Weekly Dashboard Review
Schedule 15 minutes every Monday to review the dashboard. Ask:
- —Are the leading indicators on track? If not, what blocked them?
- —Are the lagging indicators trending up? If not, which specific activity needs adjustment?
- —Which channel is producing the best business outcomes? What should I do more of?
The dashboard should produce 1–2 specific actions every week. If it does not, redesign it until it does.
