How to Build a Brand Around Data and Original Research

Original research is the highest-authority content type. Here is how to use data to build a brand position that no competitor can replicate.

The Original Research Advantage

Original research is the most powerful content type in professional services marketing for one simple reason: it cannot be replicated without doing the same research.

A competitor can write an article about the same topic you wrote about. They cannot write the same article about data that only you collected. Original research creates genuinely unique content that builds authority no other approach can match.

What Counts as Original Research

You do not need a PhD or a research team to produce original research. The types that work for consultants:

Client survey data: Survey your clients, your email list, or a target audience about their challenges, approaches, and outcomes. Even 50–100 responses produce publishable data.

Proprietary analysis: If you have access to performance data from client work (with permission and anonymization), analyzing patterns across multiple clients produces genuine insights.

Observational studies: Systematically observing a phenomenon — analyzing 100 LinkedIn profiles, auditing 50 websites, reviewing 200 posts — and reporting what you find.

Expert interviews: Synthesizing insights from structured conversations with practitioners in your field.

Building a Brand Around Research

The consultants who build the strongest authority around data are the ones who make research a recurring practice — not a one-off.

An annual benchmark report ("The State of B2B Content Marketing in 2026") creates an asset that grows more valuable over time as the series accumulates, that generates backlinks from publications covering the findings, and that positions you as the authoritative source on the topic.

The first report is an investment. The fourth annual report is a market-defining asset.
